In her artistic work, Julia Lübbecke(*1989 in Giessen) deals with the relationship between the political, tactile and emotional dimensions of knowledge. Using this connection, she examines dominant structures of order, such as categorisations, and investigates processes that render them fragile. She is particularly interested in the potential of emotions such as desire, discomfort or disgust. Through her transdisciplinary practice, which includes sculpture, photography, video and performative elements, she creates expansive installations that embody her fantasies of ephemeral forms of memory and knowledge.
She studied photography and media art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, UMPRUM – Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and the Academy of Fine Arts Leipzig. After her graduation she completed the Goldrausch Künstlerinnenprojekt postgraduate programme in 2020.
Her works have been awarded amongst others with the IKOB – Art Prize for feminist art in 2019 and grants by the Berlin Senate and Stiftung Kunstfonds. In 2022 she was a Dorothea Schlegel Artist in Residence at the Excellence Cluster of Freie Universität and her first solo catalogue was published by Sandstein Verlag.
She has exhibited internationally at Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos in Santiago de Chile, Künstler:innenhaus Bremen, Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien in Berlin and IKOB – Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen (BE). Most recently works were commissioned by Deutsches Hygiene Museum Dresden and the city of Hanover.
Julia Lübbecke is part of the collective otc - Observant Thick Conversation.
