Vestiges
Mixed Media Installation
2022
„vestige: a small part or amount of something larger, stronger, or more important that still exists from something that existed in the past“
(Cambridge Dictionary)
„Vestiges“ deals with concepts of memory regarding social movements. During a three month residency in 2022 this work was site-specifically developed for the forecourt of the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos in Santiago de Chile. The form of the installation as well as the used materials are influenced by protests which have happened continuously since 2017. These were mainly mobilized by feminist movements against the neoliberal politics as well as constitution established during the dictatorship of Pinochet. Metal and wood are often used in the so called primera línea, those who shield off water and gas flooding by the police. The shown fragmented photographs come from the artist‘s own collection of newspaper clippings collected in collaboration with the museum‘s archive, the national archive as well as community based archives. In the installation, these images are laid on top of each other in infinite layers, alternating with the artist‘s own contemporary photographs. Here, the aspect of the ephemerality of moments as well as materials is in the focus. The shown bodies merge to collages through the act of tearing down.
The three month residency has been enabled through the Global exchange grant of the Federal State of Berlin which I've been awarded with in 2022. The work was part of the group exhibition Rebeldes at the Museo de la Memoria y los Derechos Humanos in Santiago de Chile which was running from 17 March til 14 August 2022 . Public broadcasting radio station Deutschlandfunk reported: „Rebeldes“ – ein deutsch-chilenisches feministisches Ausstellungsprojekt
Margit Neuhold, editor at Camera Austria International, wrote about "Vestiges" for the austrian magazine TAGEBUCH: Gesten der Teilhabe
